Feral Interactive has long been one of our favorite publishers of Mac games; they’ve been doing it since you had to buy your games in stores! And now they’re looking to become one of our favorite publishers of iOS games with announcement of Rome: Total War for iPad.

Total War has been on iOS before—Total War Battles: Kingdom is available, and I have a copy of a similarly titled game with a Shogun theme, although I can’t find it in the App Store anymore. But with Rome: Total War, Feral promises a “…Total War classic in all its full desktop-quality glory.”

ROME: Total War is an epic-scale strategy game where players will experience the grandeur and brutality that was ancient Rome. Running from the late Roman Republic to the early Roman Empire with campaigns ranging across Europe and North Africa, ROME: Total War offers a seamless integration of strategy and tactics that allows players to fight spectacular battles, while using diplomacy, subterfuge and assassination to pave the road to ultimate victory.

It says a lot about the iPad’s capabilities (and perhaps more about the development team) that Rome: Total War will comes without compromise. The game will feature a full scale campaign, 11 factions, enormous 3D battles fought with thousands of on-screen units, and the economic, civil and religious arms management fans of the series have come to expect.

And just how will that be done? Feral states that “Rome: Total War utilizes an intuitive touch-screen interface to accurately replicate the desktop game’s mouse and keyboard controls. It also features upgraded graphics that take advantage of the iPad’s high-resolution Retina screen.”

Rome: Total War for iPad is listed as coming this autumn, and will be followed by the Barbarian Invasion and Alexander expansion packs. As you wait, it’s up to you to make sure you have a first gen iPad Air or iPad mini 2 model or better to play them. If you don’t, or if you just can’t wait, there’s always the Mac version.
