Review: Carved Satellite Series iPhone 6/6s case

I really like what Carved has going on there in Indiana. It’s the kind of company where every employee on the team gets a website photo, including the dog. They boast of full, solid wood iPhone cases, and that’s certainly available. They also make wood skins, which doesn’t sound like it should be a thing, but it is.

Here, though, we’re going to talk about their Satellite Series case, because it’s likely the one that makes the most sense for the iPhone gamer. Or more specifically, the Traveller Case as built through their Satellite Series customizer. What this is, as explained by Carved, are “the burls, the knots and the discarded pieces” from their wood case crafting process mixed with color to create unique pieces of natural artwork.

It’s really quite slick looking, and there are currently 50 designs from which to choose.

Selecting your case is a matter of choosing your color pattern and case type (clear slim case, matte black slim case, and traveler case). The iPhone 6s Plus review unit provided by Carved is the Traveler Case with the Suria pattern (pictured above), I believe. Because of the uniqueness of the wood, each case made will have a different design, meaning you won’t know exactly what you get until it arrives. I can assure you, though, that you’re unlikely to be disappointed.

Your design pattern is then attached to a polycarbonate case that would stand up on its own without the wood artwork. the rubber sides are flexible enough for easy application and removal, but remain secure around the curved edges of the iPhone when in use. The sleep/wake and volume buttons are covered, but remain fully responsive beneath the thinner parts of the shell. The mute switch is open, and perhaps a bit too small, but usable. The membrane around port openings on the bottom of the case is very thin, making it quite easy to use most headphone jacks and Lightning cables.

Using third-party docks will likely present a problem, but it’s so easy to get the iPhone out of the case that this won’t be a hassle for most users.

So, how about gaming? There are a few features of the Satellite Series Traveler Case that make it a great option for gamers. First, the sides of the case are textured for an improved grip. Second, the sides remain pretty much flush with the screen, so you don’t have to worry about the case getting in the way of the requisite swiping and tapping for most iPhone games.

And finally, although the case offers full protection from scuffs and decent protection from drops, it’s thin enough that it doesn’t feel cumbersome to hold for prolonged gaming sessions.

This long into the iPhone 6/6s lifecycle, it’s likely you’ve already settled on your preferred case. I get that. But if you’re looking for a change or just recently got your new phone, the Carved Satellite Series Traveler Case is an outstanding option in unique design and gaming functionality.
