Casual Game Spotlight: Ant Maniac
Stand and Deliver! It’s the Ant Maniac, come to play. With some body armor and a great big gun on his back, this particular ant will be having a bit of fun.
Ant Maniac is a perpetual runner obstacle course game. Collect all the coins you can so you can buy upgrades to better guns, longer lasting power-ups, etc. But there is a neat variation with this runner game—the track on which you run does not have lanes, it’s a pipe so you can crawl all the way around it as you run along. By the way, you will be doing quite a bit of crawling to avoid the numerous and varied obstacles. As if that was not enough, there are other bugs on this tubular highway with you. The problem is they are going the wrong way, and if you bump into one it will cost you a life.
To help with the wrong-way traffic problem, you have large gun mounted on your back. Just tap the screen to fire and you can lay down a little road rage to help keep the way clear. Of course, while you are shooting you aren’t steering (um, herding? maybe shifting?) your ant along the pipe, so you’ll need to be extra careful about the obstacles. So, you get coin collecting, obstacle avoiding, and bug shooting—how can you not have fun with that?
All of this comes in a package with nice graphics and a decent soundtrack. The down side is the adware aspect. There is a banner ad at the bottom of the screen, which is mostly innocuous; it only launched a web ad on me a couple times, but those were caused by a little finger drift while playing. You also get some pop-up ads (static and video). The ads are persistent, but not so obnoxious to render the game unplayable. The silver lining of this ad cloud is the button at the top right of the start screen; tap it and you can purchase your way out of the ads and just play the game.
The game itself provides a bit of challenge, looks good, plays well, and is fun. Overall, Ant Maniac is not bad, and is a decent addition to your time wasters. It’s available now for free in the iTunes App Store.
